Sources differ: Medium to difficult (trip reports) (zigzagpeharta.ro; turismmaramures.ro)

The most used ascent, from the south-west: a long forest road from Groșii Țibleșului to the former mine below the range, then the blue-band trail through forest to the small Arcer refuge (1,443 m), up a long, steep scree slope to the main ridge between Arcer and Țibleș, and a short ridge walk to the summit cross (1,839 m). About 6 km and 950 m of ascent from the mine; around 3 hours up.

From Groșii Țibleșului (Maramureș) turn right about 1 km past the sports hall at the signs and map board, and follow the dirt road up the valley for about 9 km to the Țibleș forestry cabin (Cabana Țibleș) and a further 3–5 km to the water treatment station and the former mine and IPEG tunnel, where most people park; in dry weather the road is passable for ordinary cars, but it has been reported in poor condition. Below the mine the track is flooded by water draining from the old adit. Blue band and blue dot share the path at first: cross the bouldery bed of Izvorul Rău, climb steeply through spruce forest and the meadow of Poiana Lungă, past a spring, to Refugiul Arcer (1,443 m), a small, basic shelter, in about 1½ hours. Here the markings split. The blue band follows an old geological road, then a narrow path through dwarf pine and a long, steep scree slope to the main ridge midway between Arcer and Țibleș. Turn right along the ridge to Vârful Țibleș (1,839 m), with a large iron cross and bell; about 3 hours and 6 km from the car. For a loop, follow the ridge north-west to Vârful Arcer (about 25 minutes) and descend the blue-dot path, steep, rocky and briefly exposed, back to the refuge. Bran, a few metres different in height, is 25 minutes south-east of Țibleș along the ridge. Waymarking is patchy and signposts have fallen in places; carry a GPS track.

Overview

A rocky volcanic summit (1,839 m) with a big iron cross on the short main ridge of the Țibleș Mountains, separating Maramureș from Țara Lăpușului. Remote and little visited, it is reached by long forest roads and a steep scree climb, with wide views to the Rodna Mountains.

The Țibleș Mountains are a compact volcanic range in northern Romania, part of the Inner Eastern Carpathians, cutting off the valleys of historical Maramureș from the rest of the country. Their crest is short and rugged, with three tops close together: Arcer, Țibleș and Bran. Țibleș is the central summit, a block of volcanic rock with dwarf pine and juniper on its flanks, a large iron cross set up in 2000 and a bell that walkers ring. To the east the main ridge continues towards the Rodna Mountains via the Șetref pass.

This is a wild area: bears are common, sheepdogs guard the summer pastures, there are no staffed huts, and the only shelter on the normal route is the small Arcer refuge. Waymarking was renewed on some sections but remains patchy, and many signposts have fallen. Approaches use long forest roads from Groșii Țibleșului to the south-west, Botiza and Dragomirești to the north, or Fiad and Zagra to the south.

The reward is solitude, a rocky ridge walk unusual for this part of the Carpathians, and views over Maramureș to the Rodna, Gutâi and Lăpuș mountains.

Climbing Notes

Allow a full day: about 3 hours up from the mine car park with 950 m of ascent, or 8 hours for the Țibleș–Bran–Arcer loop (14.7 km, 1,250 m). The scree climb on the blue band and the rocky blue-dot descent from Arcer need sure feet and good boots; poles help. Carry a GPS track, enough water and food. The driving approach takes 1½–2 hours from Baia Mare, and the last stretch of forest road can be rough after rain.

Refugiul Arcer has a sleeping platform for a few people, an attic, a stove and firewood, but is basic and usable only in the warm season; bring a sleeping bag. Bears live throughout the range; make noise in the forest and be cautious around sheepfolds and their dogs. In winter the steep slopes are avalanche-prone and the route is a serious undertaking.

History

Mining and geological prospecting left their mark on the south-western side of the range: the forest road from Groșii Țibleșului ends at a former mine and the IPEG tunnel (Izvorul Rău – Dragomirești), and the path to the Arcer refuge follows an old geological road. The summit cross was erected in 2000.
