Routes
1The standard Bulgarian route to the highest point of the Osogovo Mountains: a long, gentle walk from Osogovo Hut (1,616 m) on a red-marked former border-patrol track and ridge path via the Prevala and Shapka shelters to the border summit. About 13–15 km and 650–900 m of ascent each way; 3½–4 hours up, 3–3½ hours back.

Start at Osogovo Hut (1,616 m) in the Tri Buki area, about 15–20 km of steep, winding asphalt above Kyustendil. The red-marked trail leaves the road on the right about 100 m from the hut towards the Tri Buki hotel; a sign gives 3 h 40 min to Ruen. Walk past the Gramadite granite plateau, under Kulin Kamak and the Choveka peak to the converted border post at Prevala, which serves as a shelter, with the Beg Bunar fountain just beyond it, about 1½ hours from the hut. Some forks of the dirt road in the first half hour are poorly marked. From Prevala, follow the broad former border-troops track that runs just below the main ridge, or the ridge itself for better views, past Kulitsite, Tsaren Kamak and the Shapka shelter (about 1¼ hours from Prevala, with water 30–40 m to the south), then over or around Mali Ruen (2,230 m) to the Ruen shelter just below the summit and the top (2,251 m), about 40 minutes from Shapka. The summit lies on the Bulgaria–North Macedonia border. The walking is technically easy but long and almost completely without shade; the last reliable water is at Prevala and Shapka. Return the same way in about 3–3½ hours. In winter the route becomes a long snowshoe or ski tour with only sparse pole markings after Prevala, and navigation in fog requires GPS. On the Macedonian side, unmarked approaches lead from the Ponikva ski area via Tsarev Vrv (about 6 hours one way) or from the Toranica mine above Kriva Palanka via the saddle between Ruen and Tsarev Vrv (2–3 hours); these are described only in older sources.

Route confidence 75%Overview
The highest point of the Osogovo Mountains (2,251 m), a broad grassy summit on the Bulgaria–North Macedonia border above Kyustendil. A long but technically easy walk from Osogovo Hut along a former border-patrol track and an open, shadeless ridge.
Ruen crowns the Osogovo range, a rounded massif of granite and metamorphic schists that straddles the border between south-western Bulgaria and north-eastern North Macedonia. The summit and the long ridges around it are open alpine grassland; the Sovolyanska Bistritsa and Eleshnitsa, tributaries of the Struma, rise on its Bulgarian slopes. With about 1,400 m of prominence it is the dominant summit for a long way around, and it is No. 27 among Bulgaria's 100 National Tourist Sites.
The usual ascent starts at Osogovo Hut above Kyustendil and follows a red-marked dirt road and ridge path that was built for the border troops. Converted border posts at Prevala, Shapka and just below the summit now serve as basic shelters. The line is easy underfoot but long: 13–15 km and 650–900 m of ascent each way, almost entirely without shade.
On the Macedonian side the mountain is approached from the Ponikva ski area above Kočani via Tsarev Vrv, or from the Toranica mine near Kriva Palanka; these approaches are unmarked. Free-roaming horses and electric fences are met on the Bulgarian side in summer.
Climbing Notes
A full-day walk of 7–9 hours return from Osogovo Hut, suited to anyone with good stamina; there are no technical difficulties. Start early in summer to avoid heat and afternoon thunderstorms, carry at least two litres of water (refill at Prevala and Shapka) and good sun protection. The ridge is easy to lose in fog, and in winter the marking after Prevala is limited to sparse poles, so carry a GPS track. Because the summit is on the state border, carry an ID document; hikers report that the Bulgarian border police in Kyustendil should be notified in advance (rdgp-kyustendil@mvr.bg), and crossing into North Macedonia on foot is not a legal border crossing. Osogovo Hut is open all year and makes a convenient base; in winter the route is a long snowshoe or ski tour.
History
The first ascent is not recorded. The ridge was a closed border zone during the Cold War, and the shelters at Prevala (converted 2007) and Ruen (built 2006) occupy or replace former border installations.
