The standard and shortest way up Herzegovina's highest peak: a long, waymarked day hike of about 1,000–1,200 m of ascent from the Masna Luka mountain lodge on the Blidinje plateau, through Bosnian pine forest onto the karst plateau of Čvrsnica and up a steep scree slope to the summit. About 5 hours up, 9 hours round trip, with no water on the way.

Masna Luka (about 1,200 m) lies on the asphalt regional road R419 from Jablanica to the Blidinje plateau, which is ploughed in winter. Start at the Pločno mountain lodge or slightly lower by the church of St Elijah (sv. Ilija); the two paths join after about ten minutes. The path climbs through dense forest of Bosnian pine (munika, Pinus heldreichii) past the Boričevac depression (about 1.2 km, also reachable by a gravel road from R419) and steepens to reach the edge of the Čvrsnica plateau at about 1,600 m. After about 1½ hours the path passes viewpoints at Ćužića kuk, above cliffs up to 300 m high, with a view back over Blidinje and Vran. It then crosses rolling karst south-east to a junction above Juneći kuk, where the path to Veliki Vilinac and the Vilinac hut continues ahead and the Pločno path turns south-west. The crux is the final steep, slippery scree slope below the summit, crossed by a well-built path that gains about 320 m in the last kilometre. A small military post with two soldiers occupies the summit; it is served by a gravel supply road from the south, which is not a hiking route. HPD Prenj gives 5 hours to the summit and 1,028 m of ascent; the nature park gives about 17 km and 9 hours for the round trip, with 1,200 m of ascent. Descend the same way. There is no water anywhere on the route; the park advises at least 2 litres per person and warns not to count on the soldiers for water.

Overview

The highest peak of Čvrsnica and of Herzegovina (2,228 m), a bare limestone dome above the Blidinje plateau with a small military post on top. A long, waterless day hike of about 1,000–1,200 m from Masna Luka, through Bosnian pine forest and across a high karst plateau to a steep scree finish.

Čvrsnica is a high karst massif in western Herzegovina between the Blidinje plateau, the Neretva valley and the deep Grabovica and Drežnica gorges, and Pločno is its culminating point. The mountain lies within Blidinje Nature Park, whose lower slopes hold what the park describes as Europe's largest stand of the endemic Bosnian pine (munika, Pinus heldreichii). Above the forest the massif opens into a plateau of karst hollows, small summits and limestone pavement, with cliffs dropping hundreds of metres on its northern edge.

The usual ascent from the Masna Luka lodge on the Blidinje plateau is waymarked and non-technical, but long: about 17 km and 9 hours for the round trip, with no water. Views from the summit reach the surrounding Dinaric ranges and, on clear days, the Adriatic. The top is occupied by a small military installation reached by a gravel supply road from the south; hikers are not barred from the summit, but the soldiers should not be relied on for water.

The massif is also crossed by the Via Dinarica White Trail, and the Vilinac hut (1,961 m) under Veliki Vilinac allows a two-day traverse of Čvrsnica from Blidinje or from the Diva Grabovica valley.

Climbing Notes

Allow a full day: about 5 hours up and 9 hours round trip, with roughly 1,000–1,200 m of ascent over undulating ground. Navigation is easy in good weather on a cleared and waymarked path, but mobile signal is unreliable and the plateau is confusing in fog; carry a park map or GPS track and remember the key junctions. The final scree slope is steep and slippery, especially in descent.

Carry at least 2 litres of water per person and sun protection; there is no water or shade on the plateau. Start early to be down before dark. In winter and spring the upper slopes are snow-covered and crampons and an ice axe are needed; the Blidinje road is ploughed in winter.

Blidinje Nature Park offers guided tours with a licensed mountain guide (200 KM per group of up to 8, booked through Udruga 'Visit Blidinje'). For a two-day trip, combine Pločno with Veliki Vilinac and a night at the Vilinac hut, which opens by prior arrangement.

History

The Vilinac hut on Čvrsnica dates from 1939. A memorial climb of Pločno in honour of Ivica Plazonjić is held every year in late July.
