A long, lonely day to the highest point above the Val Mora: over the Döss dal Termel (2,351 m) into the Val Mora, then up the pathless Val Murtaröl through dwarf pine, scree and late snowfields to the summit ridge. No waymarks, steep loose ground below the ridge, about 1,300 m of ascent including the counter-climb.

From the Ofenpass (Pass dal Fuorn, 2,149 m) on the Zernez–Müstair road, walk south over alpine pastures to the Döss dal Termel saddle (2,351 m) and descend about 300 m into the Val Mora. Near Alp Mora (2,084 m) a small wooden bridge crosses the Aua da Val Mora towards the Spinai meadows (otherwise a ford). Climb the meadows and pick up faint traces through the dwarf pines into the Val Murtaröl at about 2,100 m. There is only a narrow, unmarked trace in the valley. Follow it, first left of the stream bed and later on the right, past point 2,584 m; rock steps can be bypassed to the side. Above, tiring scree or old avalanche snow leads steeply to the summit ridge. Camptocamp's description heads for the broad saddle at about 3,058 m (probably the Fuorcla Murtaröl) and traverses east on ledges on the south side past point 3,174 m, with a short rock step down to the col before the summit; a hikr party climbed snow gullies directly to the ridge east of the summit. The last section below the ridge is very steep, loose scree and broken rock with some rockfall risk, and unpleasant in descent. Summit with cairn and pole. Descend the same way and re-climb the 300 m to the Döss dal Termel; allow about 8 hours in all. From Italy the same Val Murtaröl line is reached from the Passo di Fraele (1,952 m) along the dirt road and path past the Passo di Val Mora; most of the 7.3 km to the foot of the Val Murtaröl can be cycled.

Route confidence 55%Overview
Piz Murtaröl, or Cima la Casina in Italian (3,180 m), is the highest peak above the Val Mora on the Swiss–Italian border between the Ofenpass and the Valle di Fraele. It is a remote, unmarked scree-and-snow ascent for experienced mountain walkers.
Piz Murtaröl stands on the border between Graubünden (Val Müstair) and the Province of Sondrio in Italy. On the Swiss side it rises above the long, uninhabited Val Mora; on the Italian side above the Valle di Fraele with its reservoirs. It is the highest summit around the Val Mora, in a quiet corner between the Ofenpass, the Swiss National Park and Livigno.
There is no hut and no marked path to the top. Both documented summer lines go up the Val Murtaröl, a side valley of the Val Mora, on faint traces through dwarf pine and then over scree and old avalanche snow to the summit ridge. The difficulty is less in any one move than in the length, the route-finding and the steep, loose ground just below the ridge. From the Ofenpass the day includes a 300 m counter-climb over the Döss dal Termel on return.
The reward is solitude: hikr reports describe the Val Murtaröl as very lonely, with good flowers in early summer. In winter and spring the peak is also skied from the Val Mora.
Climbing Notes
For experienced mountain walkers comfortable on pathless T5 terrain, steep scree and short easy rock (I). Expect a long day of about 8 hours from the Ofenpass. Carry a map and GPS track, a helmet for the loose upper section, and in early summer crampons and an ice axe for the snow gullies below the ridge. Start early and turn back if thunderstorms build, as the upper slopes give no shelter.
From Italy, start at the Passo di Fraele (reached from Valdidentro/Bormio) and cycle the dirt road past the Passo di Val Mora to the foot of the Val Murtaröl to save time. There is no staffed hut on either route; the nearest accommodation is on the Ofenpass, at Buffalora or in the Val Müstair and Livigno valleys.
