Sources differ: T3+ (trip reports for the rock steps on the ridge above the Beverin Lücke)

The easiest way up the pyramid that dominates the Domleschg: from the Bus Alpin stop at Tguma (about 2,340 m) above Wergenstein, a mountain path over Alp Tumpriv and Alp Nursin and up a steep scree cirque to the Beverin Lücke (2,826 m), then a short ridge with two rock steps and a few chains to the 2,998 m summit.

About 72% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

From the car park and Bus Alpin stop at Tguma above Wergenstein, follow the mountain path north across Alp Tumpriv. Near point 2457 it meets the path coming up from Mathon through the Val Mirer and Alp Nursin; at the junction on Alp Nursin (about 2,442 m) keep straight on for the Beverin Lücke rather than right for the Beverin Pintg. A wide scree cirque leads fairly steeply up to the Beverin Lücke (Farcletta digl Bavregn, 2,826 m), where the alpine path from the Glaspass arrives from the west. Turn right (north-east) up the south-west ridge, about 170 m above the col. Two rock steps (T3+) are passed with a few easy chained sections, then stony ground leads to the broad, bare summit with a large cairn. Most people descend the same way. The alternative over the south-east shoulder to the Beverin Pintg involves an 8 m ladder down a rock step at about 2,769 m and a short rocky gully, and rejoins the ascent path at Alp Nursin. Starting in Mathon (about 1,540 m) instead of Tguma adds about 1½ hours and 330 m; the Viamala tourism loop Mathon–Beverin Lücke–summit–Beverin Pintg–Mathon is 16.2 km with 1,478 m of ascent and 6 h 40 min walking.

Overview

A four-sided slate pyramid (2,998 m) that dominates the view from the Domleschg and Thusis, at the heart of the Naturpark Beverin. Marked mountain paths from the Schamserberg and the Glaspass lead to the summit, the easier with only short chained steps.

Piz Beverin rises between the Schams valley to the east, the Safiental to the west and the Domleschg to the north. Its regular pyramid shape makes it one of the best-known viewpoints of central Graubünden, and it gave its name to the Naturpark Beverin, which covers the Schamserberg, Safiental and surrounding valleys. The summit is bare and stony, with a large cairn and views over the Domleschg, the Safiental and the Adula peaks.

There are three usual starting points: the Schamserberg villages of Mathon and Wergenstein (with the Bus Alpin to Tguma at over 2,300 m), and the Glaspass on the Thusis–Tschappina side. All routes meet at the Beverin Lücke (2,826 m), from which a short ridge with two rock steps leads to the top. The southern approach is a T3 mountain walk; the SAC's route from the Glaspass is a T4 alpine path with chains and some rockfall risk. A ladder on the Beverin Pintg shoulder makes a round trip possible.

In winter the mountain is a classic ski tour from Mathon or Wergenstein, via the Einshorn, the Beverin Pintg or the Beverin Lücke.

Climbing Notes

From Tguma the ascent is about 660 m and suits fit, sure-footed walkers; from Mathon it is a full day of about 1,480 m. The Glaspass route needs a head for heights for the chained sections and care with loose rock; rockfall warnings have been posted there in the past. The slate becomes slippery when wet, and there is no shelter on the mountain, so avoid it when thunderstorms are forecast.

Cars need a permit for the alp roads above Mathon (to Mursenas or Bot Lava) and Wergenstein (to Tguma): CHF 10 for three days from a machine at the turn-off (coins, TWINT or Parkingpay). The Bus Alpin to Tguma runs in summer and autumn and must be booked in advance. A traverse from the Glaspass to Wergenstein using buses at both ends is popular.

History

The name goes back to bovarinum, from Latin bos, 'ox', making it the 'ox mountain' (SAC). The 1996 SAC guide (Bündner Alpen 2) lists six routes: the south-west ridge and west flank (L), the east ridge, the south slope, the south-east ridge and the north-west ridge (ZS). No first-ascent record was found.
