Horský hotel Kráľova studňa sits at about 1,270 m in the southern Veľká Fatra. It is reached by the seasonal weekend Turbus from Banská Bystrica, on foot from the Harmanec area, or by car on a 14 km rough forest road through Zalámaná dolina that is open only to hotel guests with a paid permit. From the hotel climb past the Kráľova studňa spring and the SNP memorial meadows to the main ridge and follow it north-east to Krížna (1,574 m), recognisable by its military transmitter. From Krížna the red-marked Veľkofatranská magistrála follows the broad, treeless ridge north without steep climbs, over the shoulder of Frčkov (1,586 m) and across a shallow saddle to the south summit of Ostredok (1,595.6 m), marked by a signpost. The north top, 400 m further, is the former summit, now signed 'Ostredok – rázcestie', where the green trail from the Gaderská and Dedošová valleys joins. Return the same way. There is no water on the ridge; fill up at the hotel. The ridge is fully exposed to wind and storms, and in winter its steep side slopes are avalanche-prone; the national park restricts winter hiking to periods without avalanche danger.

Route confidence 75%Overview
The 1,596 m high point of the Veľká Fatra in central Slovakia, a broad grassy double summit on the treeless main ridge, crossed by the red Veľkofatranská magistrála. An easy ridge walk of 2½–3 hours from Kráľova studňa, with views to the Tatras, Low Tatras and Malá Fatra.
Ostredok lies at the centre of the Hôľna Fatra, the high, rounded limestone and grassland heart of the Veľká Fatra National Park, between the Turiec basin to the west and the Revúca valley to the east. The summit is a gentle double hump on a long, open ridge of alpine meadows above deep forested valleys; the slopes are smooth, steep and free of trees near the top. Neighbouring summits include Frčkov, Krížna, Suchý vrch and Ploská.
The ridge path, the 49 km red Veľkofatranská magistrála, runs over the top, so there is no off-trail scrambling: the appeal is the walk along the roof of the range and a view that can reach the High Tatras, Low Tatras, Malá Fatra and, in exceptional conditions, peaks in Hungary, Austria, Czechia and Poland. The easiest access is from the mountain hotel at Kráľova studňa; longer routes climb from Turecká, Liptovské Revúce, Blatnica, Necpaly and Staré Hory.
In winter the ridge is a classic ski-touring objective but also one of the most avalanche-prone areas of the range.
Climbing Notes
A straightforward ridge walk in summer for anyone with basic fitness; the main issues are weather and logistics. The shortest approach, from Horský hotel Kráľova studňa (7 km, 350 m, 2½–3 hours one way), relies on the weekend Turbus from Banská Bystrica or a stay at the hotel, since the forest road is open only to hotel guests with a permit. From Turecká or Liptovské Revúce expect 950–1,050 m of ascent and 4–5½ hours up.
Carry all your water, a windproof and a warm layer; the ridge has no shelter or springs and storms build quickly. Dogs must be on a lead, bicycles are banned on the ridge between Krížna and Ostredok, and camping is allowed only as a one-off emergency stop at a few designated sites such as the Kýšky saddle. The approach forests are prime brown-bear habitat. In winter check the HZS avalanche bulletin; ski touring in the non-forest zone is allowed only from 1 November to 31 March at avalanche danger levels 1–2.
History
Until 2015 the north top (1,592.5 m) was regarded as the highest point of the Veľká Fatra. In summer 2015 the Slovak Tourist Club put up a sign on the south top, nicknamed Pustolovčia, and a survey by the Geodetic and Cartographic Institute in Bratislava confirmed it was higher (1,595.6 m). In 2016 the national naming commission moved the name Ostredok to the southern point; the old summit signpost now reads 'Ostredok – rázcestie'.
