The standard way up the highest peak in the Balkans: the Yastrebets gondola from Borovets to about 2,370 m, an easy track to Musala hut (2,389 m), then a rocky path past the Musala lakes to the Ledeno ezero (Everest) shelter at about 2,710 m and a short, steeper ridge to the summit (2,925 m). About 3 hours up from the gondola; 5–7 hours on foot from Borovets.

From the Borovets resort (about 1,350 m) take the Yastrebets gondola (about 25 minutes, 1,054 m of height gain) to the top station near the Yastrebets hut. A wide, nearly level track of about 3 km leads south into the Musala valley to Musala hut (2,389 m) in 45–60 minutes, past an unfinished large hut building. Without the gondola, the walk from Borovets through the forest takes 5–7 hours to the summit (12.6 km, about 1,590 m of ascent). From the hut the marked path climbs the valley past a chain of glacial lakes, over boulders and some steep steps, to the Ledeno ezero (Icy Lake) and the small Everest shelter on its north shore (about 2,710 m) in 1¼–1¾ hours. The last section follows the north ridge on loose, gravelly ground marked by metal posts with a fixed cable in places, about 40–45 minutes to the summit with its weather station buildings. Descend the same way and check the last gondola down (17:30–18:00 in recent summers). The route is well marked and technically easy, but the upper valley and ridge are exposed to sudden storms and fog; in winter the same line is used by ski tourers and walkers with crampons and carries avalanche risk.

Overview

The highest peak in Bulgaria and the whole Balkan Peninsula (2,925 m), a broad granite summit in the Rila mountains above the Borovets ski resort. A gondola and a well-marked path past glacial lakes make it a straightforward summer day walk; in winter it is the coldest place in the Balkans.

Musala rises at the eastern end of the Rila range in south-western Bulgaria, inside Rila National Park. It has a prominence of about 2,470 m and an isolation of over 800 km, and the rivers Iskar, Maritsa and Mesta all rise close to it. The summit is broad and rocky and carries a weather station; around it lie cirques with more than a dozen glacial lakes, including the Ledeno ezero (Icy Lake) at about 2,700 m.

In summer the ascent is a walk. The Yastrebets gondola from Borovets removes most of the height, and from its top station a broad track and a stony, well-marked path lead past Musala hut and the Everest shelter to the summit in about three hours. Fit walkers can also do the whole climb from Borovets on foot, about 1,600 m of ascent.

The mountain's climate is harsh. Temperatures are below freezing for about eight months of the year, snow lies on the upper slopes into June and can fall in midsummer, and thunderstorms and fog build quickly. In winter Musala is a serious objective with avalanche danger in the upper valley.

Climbing Notes

In summer no technical skills are needed. A reasonably fit walker manages the 550 m of ascent from the gondola top in about three hours, and the round trip in a day if the gondola runs; without it, allow 9–11 hours. The path above Musala hut crosses boulders and the final ridge is loose, so proper boots help. Altitude may be felt at nearly 3,000 m but rarely causes problems.

Start early: afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and fog can hide the markings in the upper valley. Bring warm clothing even in July. An overnight at the Ledeno ezero shelter (about 30 places, food and drinks sold) allows a sunrise ascent; book ahead.

From November to May the route is a winter climb: crampons, an ice axe and avalanche equipment are needed. Consider a local mountain guide for winter ascents.

History

The name comes from the Ottoman Turkish 'musalla', a place of prayer. From 1949 to 1962 the peak was officially named Stalin. A cosmic-ray research station built on the summit in 1960 with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was destroyed by an electrical fire on 29 October 1983. The Everest shelter by the Ledeno ezero was built shortly after the first Bulgarian ascent of Everest in 1984. Construction of a large new Musala hut began in 1984, stalled in the 1990s and had not been opened to guests as of 2024; the old hut remains in use.
