SACT3HikeNormal route

A long, steep day from the border village of Vavouri (about 675 m) in Thesprotia: farm roads to about 1,100 m, then a very steep, largely pathless slope to the open summit ridge at 1,600 m and on to the 1,806 m top on the Greek–Albanian border. About 1,250 m of ascent; a recorded loop takes about 8 hours.

Vavouri lies on the south side of Mourgana in the Filiates district, close to Lia and a few kilometres from the Albanian border. From the village, farm roads climb north through scrub and oak woods towards the mountain. Where the road ends at about 1,100 m, the only hard part of the route begins: roughly 1 km of very steep slope (about 45 % on average) that gains some 500 m to around 1,600 m, close below the summit ridge. The upper mountain is largely unforested, and the summit itself sits on the frontier, looking down on the Albanian villages on the far side. A GPS track recorded by a Greek walker in November 2011 makes an 18.6 km loop from Vavouri with about 1,275 m of ascent in about 8 hours, rated moderate; using the steep slope for the ascent leaves the easier ground for the descent. Walkers also start from Lia, and from Tsamantas rough farm tracks give vehicle access to the higher slopes. There is no waymarked path, hut or reliable water on the upper mountain, and the area is remote. Navigate with a GPS track, avoid the steep slope when it is wet or snow-covered, and do not descend into Albania: the ridge is not a border crossing.

Overview

A limestone massif on the Greek–Albanian border in north-west Epirus, also called the Tsamantas Mountains, rising to 1,806 m directly on the frontier. Rarely visited: a long, steep, unmarked ascent from the border villages of Vavouri, Lia or Tsamantas.

Mourgana (Greek Μουργκάνα, Albanian Murgana) is a single massif that begins in Greece, above the villages of Filiates district in Thesprotia, and ends in Albania. The Greek part runs from Lista to just north of Tsamantas, and the highest point, 1,806 m, lies on the border itself and has a prominence of about 1,250 m. Other tops include Ypsilantis (1,747 m) and Fourka (1,522 m). The rock is limestone, with steep, rugged walls and cirque-like headwalls on the north-east side.

The lower slopes carry maquis of strawberry tree, holm oak and kermes oak, giving way to deciduous oak, juniper and fir higher up; most of the upper mountain is open and unforested, with mountain tea and aromatic herbs. Wolves, wild boar, martens and roe deer live here, and eagles and other raptors nest on the crags. Good springs rise on the slopes.

There are no huts and no waymarked summit path. The ascent from Vavouri is a long day of about 1,250 m, with one very steep slope above the end of the farm road; regional mountaineering clubs from Igoumenitsa, Ioannina and Preveza organise occasional ascents.

Climbing Notes

Plan a full day (about 8 hours for the Vavouri loop) with about 1,250 m of ascent. The ground is not technical, but the steep slope above the farm road is hard work and slippery when wet; the summit area is unmarked, so carry a GPS track and turn back in cloud. Take plenty of water, and warm, waterproof layers: the open summit ridge is exposed.

The best months are late spring and early autumn; in summer start early. In winter the upper mountain is usually snow-covered and the steep slope becomes a serious undertaking. The summit is on the Schengen external border with Albania: stay on the Greek side and carry ID. Accommodation is limited to guesthouses in villages such as Lia; otherwise stay in Filiates or Igoumenitsa.

History

The border villages of Mourgana were the scene of fighting in the Second World War, commemorated by the monument to the Unknown Soldier at Ampelonas (Povla), and local memory also recalls the hardships of the Greek Civil War. Tsamantas has a folklore museum, founded in 1983 in the old stone school, with more than 3,000 objects donated by villagers, and Lia, about 1 km from the border, has an art museum with works by Theophilos. The 30th meeting of mountaineering clubs was held at Tsamantas, and clubs climbed the summit in August 2016.
