Routes
1The standard ascent of Pyrgos, the highest summit of Oeta: from the EOS refuge at Trapeza (about 1,750 m), reachable by dirt road, cross the Livadies meadows past a small alpine pond, climb over Alykaina and follow the open plateau to a short rocky summit cone. About 6.2 km, +525 m and 2–3 hours; navigation is the main difficulty.
About 1% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.
Why? 3 check notes
- ascent 659 m is 1.7× the net gain 395 m: the line probably detours down and back up (not a traverse)
- DIN time up 3.95 h vs published 2.5 h (+58%)

The refuge at Trapeza (about 1,745–1,760 m) below Greveno is reached by a dirt road from Kastania, or on foot from Ypati in 4–5 hours (8.1 km, +1,375 m, red-square marks, frequent springs). From the refuge follow the dirt road through a narrow rocky defile into the Livadies, the high meadows of Oeta, where a small fenced pond (about 1,800 m, alpine newts) lies above the Kalogeros spring. Turn right onto a poor track climbing gently towards Alykaina, or follow a path along a shallow gully and then 4x4 tracks up to the sparsely wooded Alykaina ridge (about 2,000–2,040 m). Continue south to the Pyrgos–Alykaina saddle, where a faint track becomes a path. With fewer flocks grazing, the path is no longer well trodden; a line of orange marks helps. Drop slightly to a saddle at the foot of the summit cone and climb fairly steep, rocky ground to the top (about 2,150 m), with views to Giona, Vardousia, Olympus, Agrafa and Evia. There is almost no shade and waymarking is incomplete; in fog the plateau is easy to get lost on. Return the same way. Pyrgos can also be climbed from Pavliani via Katavothra or from Neochori and Mavrolithari.

Route confidence 70%Overview
Oeta (Oiti) is the forested mountain above Lamia and Ypati in central Greece, a national park with fir forests, high meadows and alpine ponds. Its highest summit, Pyrgos (about 2,150 m), is an easy but poorly marked walk across the summit plateau from the Trapeza refuge.
Oeta rises south-west of Lamia, between the Spercheios valley to the north and the Mornos and Kifissos basins to the south, with Giona and Vardousia as its southern neighbours. Its core is protected as the Oiti National Park. The northern slopes above Ypati are steep and covered in Greek fir; the top of the mountain is a broad plateau of meadows (the Livadies), sinkholes such as Katavothra, and rounded summits: Pyrgos (the highest, usually given as 2,151–2,152 m), Alykaina, Greveno and Monodendri.
The plateau is known for its flora: in May and June protected poet's narcissus covers the meadows around Livadies and Katavothra, and the small alpine pond at Livadies holds alpine newts. Roe deer live in the forests.
In mythology, Oeta is where Heracles built his funeral pyre; the site of the ancient sanctuary of the Pyra of Heracles lies near Pavliani. The ascent of Pyrgos is gentle and short from the refuge, but the plateau is wide, the path faint and the marks patchy, so it demands care in fog.
Climbing Notes
From the Trapeza refuge, reachable by dirt road from Kastania, Pyrgos is a 2–3 hour walk each way with about 525 m of ascent. The classic two-day trip walks up from Ypati to the refuge (4–5 hours, about 1,375 m of continuous ascent through fir forest with frequent springs), camps or stays near the refuge, and crosses the plateau to Pyrgos the next day.
Carry a GPS track and the Anavasi 1:30,000 map: waymarking on the plateau is incomplete and the path fades as grazing has declined. There is almost no shade above the refuge. Spring (May–June) is the best time for flowers. In winter the plateau is a classic snowshoe and ski-touring area, but in poor visibility it is very easy to get lost; crampons and an ice axe are needed on the summit cone.
History
Oeta features in Greek mythology as the place of Heracles' death on a pyre; remains of the ancient Pyra sanctuary survive near Pavliani. Thermopylae lies at the eastern foot of the mountain.
