Lift closedReported 23 May 2026
The Stresa–Alpino–Mottarone cable car remains closed five years after the 23 May 2021 accident. Restoration of both sections with €15 million of public funding is planned; the original summer 2025 target was missed and reopening has been moved to 2026 at the earliest (status as of 23 May 2026).

The classic walk from the shore of Lake Maggiore to the 'mountain of two lakes': about 11 km and 1,290 m of ascent on lanes, mule tracks and woodland paths via Someraro and Alpino, finishing along the bed of the old Stresa–Mottarone rack railway. CAI Stresa gives 4 h 10 min up. The cable car has been closed since the 2021 disaster, so plan to walk both ways.

Start in Stresa, either in the town centre (the railway station is at about 220 m) or at the Lido di Carciano; both lines are well signed and join at the start of the old road to Someraro, a former Roman road. The way climbs steeply on asphalt to the hamlet of Someraro (about 590 m), with views over the Borromean Islands, then continues through beech and chestnut woods to Alpino (about 800 m), a villa resort with the Alpinia botanical garden and the intermediate station of the cable car. Above Alpino marked paths cross woods and pastures to the old Borromea station (about 980 m), the last halt of the rack railway that ran from Stresa to the summit from 1911 until the 1960s. From here the route follows the former railway bed up the open upper slopes to the broad grassy summit at 1,491 m, which has a small church (Madonna della Neve), restaurants and the top stations of the closed cable car and of the small ski area. From the top on a clear day you see Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, the Po plain and the Alps from Monviso to Monte Rosa. CAI Stresa gives 10.995 km, 1,291 m of ascent and 4 h 10 min for trail VL1; Itinerarium gives 12.2 km and 4½ hours from the station, CAI Novara about 5 hours and 14 km. Above Alpino much of the ground is forest road and firebreak, which becomes very steep below the summit. Descend the same way (about 3 hours, an estimate); the summit can also be reached by road.

Route confidence 75%Overview
A broad grassy summit (1,491 m) between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, known as the 'mountain of two lakes', with a view stretching from the Po plain to Monte Rosa. A long but easy walk of about 1,300 m from Stresa; the cable car has been closed since the 2021 disaster.
Mottarone rises above Stresa on the western shore of Lake Maggiore and separates it from Lake Orta. Despite its modest height it has over 1,100 m of prominence, and its rounded, mostly open summit gives one of the widest views in the pre-Alps: both lakes, the Po plain with the Apennines in the distance, and the western Alps from Monviso to the Monte Rosa and Mischabel 4,000ers.
The summit area has long been developed: a small church, restaurants, a small ski area and the top station of the Stresa–Alpino–Mottarone cable car, which replaced the Stresa–Mottarone rack railway (1911 to the 1960s). Roads reach the top from both sides, so on fine weekends you will not be alone. For walkers the appeal is the classic climb from the lake, about 1,300 m of ascent through chestnut and beech woods and old pastures.
On 23 May 2021 the haul rope of the cable car's upper section broke and a cabin fell, killing 14 people; the line has been closed ever since. A €15 million restoration funded by the Ministry of Tourism and the Piedmont Region was announced, but as of May 2026 the cable car was still out of service.
Climbing Notes
A long but technically easy day: about 4–4½ hours up and 3 hours down for a fit walker, with 1,300 m of ascent and descent. Start early in summer, as the lower slopes are hot. The route is well signed (trail VL1 of CAI Stresa). Since the cable car is closed, there is no easy way down except walking or arranging a lift by road; check the status of the cable car before relying on it. In winter the upper slopes can be snowy or icy; CAI Stresa recommends the route year-round except when snow-covered.
History
Known locally as 'mota rond' (round mountain) and also as Mergozzolo or Monterone, the mountain was officially named Mottarone in 1884. A rack railway, the first in Italy with electric traction according to CAI Novara, opened from Stresa in 1911 and closed in the 1960s; it was replaced by the Stresa–Alpino–Mottarone cable car. On 23 May 2021 the cable car accident killed 14 people, with one child surviving; the criminal case ended in September 2025 with plea agreements for three defendants.
