The classic and shortest ascent of the highest Simbruini–Cantari summit: from the Serra Sant'Antonio pass (1,608 m) past the Fonte della Moscosa and through beech woods to the Belvedere of Monte Piano, then up the Cantari ridge past the Gendarme to the summit cross. About 600 m of ascent, roughly 3 hours up, 5 hours round trip.

From the Valico di Serra Sant'Antonio (1,608 m), on the Capistrello–Campo Staffi road at the turn-off for Filettino, follow the track of CAI path 651 to the Fonte della Moscosa (1,618 m, 20–30 minutes). Here path 651 climbs steeply straight ahead, while path 696A crosses a meadow to the left and climbs through old beech woodland to the Belvedere of Monte Piano (about 1,750 m, about 45 minutes from the start), a viewpoint on the Lazio–Abruzzo border with a small Madonna and a cross. Turn right along the ridge over Monte Piano (1,838 m); this rocky, steep section is the hardest of the day. Rejoin path 651 and continue up the broad ridge, waymarked white and red on the stones, to the rock tower of the Gendarme (about 2,113–2,143 m), which can be climbed over or bypassed on a small path just below on the right. The last stretch of ridge leads in about 30 minutes to the summit and its blue cross (2,156 m). Descend the same way. Allow about 3 hours up (the park authority's figure) and 5 hours round trip. The ridge is very exposed to wind, and in winter it carries cornices on the Val Roveto side and the ascent becomes a mountaineering outing with real avalanche danger. A longer approach climbs the south-west ridge from Filettino (1,060 m) via the Bocchetta del Viglio (1,936 m) in about 3¼ hours.

Overview

The 2,156 m high point of the Monti Cantari and of the Monti Simbruini regional park, on the Lazio–Abruzzo border above Filettino. A 3-hour marked hike from the Serra Sant'Antonio pass follows an old frontier ridge, with views from the Maiella to the Pontine Islands.

Monte Viglio is the highest summit of the Monti Cantari, a limestone ridge on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo, and the highest point of the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini. The summit lies in the municipality of Filettino (province of Frosinone) and its upper area is a Natura 2000 site (ZSC IT6050004). With more than 1,400 m of prominence it gives a wide view: the Velino–Sirente and the Fucino basin to the north, the Maiella and the Marsican mountains to the north-east, the Monti Ernici to the south, and on very clear days the Pontine Islands.

The usual ascent starts at the Serra Sant'Antonio pass (1,608 m) near the Campo Staffi ski area and climbs through beech woods to the Cantari ridge, which it follows past the Gendarme rock tower to the summit cross. It is a moderate hike graded E, about 600 m up, but the upper ridge is rocky and very exposed to wind. Longer routes climb from Filettino, and a full-day traverse of the Cantari runs from Campocatino.

In winter the mountain takes on a different character: the ridge carries cornices above the Val Roveto, avalanche tracks are clearly visible, and the ascent becomes a mountaineering outing. The road to the pass from Capistrello is often closed by snow from late autumn to spring.

Climbing Notes

In summer the normal route needs only moderate fitness and steady footing on rocky ground: about 3 hours up and 5 hours round trip from the Serra Sant'Antonio pass. Carry water (the Fonte della Moscosa near the start is the only named spring) and a windproof layer; the ridge can be dangerous in strong gusts, and fog can make the broad ridge confusing.

In winter and spring an ice axe, crampons and avalanche safety gear and skills are needed; keep well back from the cornices on the Val Roveto side, especially in fog. The approach road from Capistrello may be closed by snow, in which case the ascent from Filettino (about 1,100 m, 3¼ hours up) is the alternative.

History

The south-west ridge once marked the frontier between the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Papal States, and numbered boundary stones (nos. 247–249) survive near the Bocchetta del Viglio, on the ridge and in the Fossa Comune hollow below the summit. The historic summit cross, which had been removed, was put back on 21 June 2003 by residents of Filettino and the CAI Colleferro section.
