The northern normal route: from the Chalet del Sirente on the Prati del Sirente (1,156 m) up path 15 through woods and a grassy basin, under rock walls into Valle Lupara, up its steep final scree to a broad saddle on the summit ridge (2,225 m) and along the crest past the head of the Canalone Majori to the summit cross (2,348 m). About 1,170 m of ascent, 3¼ hours up.

From the road between Rocca di Mezzo (13 km) and Secinaro (7 km), park at the Chalet del Sirente (1,156 m); a small road opposite leads down to the Fonte all'Acqua spring and picnic area. Follow the dirt road a few hundred metres to a fork at 1,228 m, leaving the Ippovia and the Majori route, and take the more obvious track right up the winding Valle del Condotto. At a second fork leave the valley-floor mule track (path 18) on the left and climb in hairpins to a shelf at 1,330 m where the dirt road is met again (30 minutes); if you find yourself on the valley floor, go back, as this junction is easy to miss. Path 15 (red-white waymarks) runs alongside the road, then climbs a wooded valley that steepens into hairpins and reaches the edge of a grassy basin at about 1,750 m (1¼ hours more), facing the Altare della Neviera. Climb straight up, then make a steep diagonal climb under high rock walls into a grassy valley and over a crest at 2,050 m overlooking Valle Lupara. Traverse to the Valle Lupara scree, pass a distinctive rock spur and climb a final steep pitch to the broad saddle on the summit ridge at 2,225 m (1 hour). Turn right along the very wide ridge, round the head of the Canalone Majori and cross meadows, scree and rock slabs to the cross, which stands above a vertical drop (30 minutes). Return the same way (about 2¼ hours). Sure-footed walkers can descend the steeper Canalone Majori (Valle Inserrata), whose floor is long stretches of loose scree, back to the chalet.

Overview

The highest point of the Sirente group (2,349 m) in central Abruzzo, a 13 km limestone ridge with a steep, gully-cut north face above the beech forests of the Prati del Sirente. The normal route climbs about 1,170 m through Valle Lupara to a summit cross above a sheer drop.

Monte Sirente is the culminating summit of a 13 km ridge running north-west to south-east between the Altopiano delle Rocche, the Fucino basin, the Valle Subequana and the Valle Peligna, inside the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. Its two faces are very different. The north side is dolomitic in character, cut by glacial gullies, towers and pinnacles that drop to a broad belt of beech forest above the Prati del Sirente; the south-west side falls more gently in open pastures towards the Fucino.

The usual route from the Chalet del Sirente on the north side follows path 15 through woods, a grassy basin and the scree of Valle Lupara, the less steep of the two great gullies below the summit, to a broad saddle on the ridge. The last 20–30 minutes along the wide crest pass the head of the dramatic Canalone Majori, a classic, demanding ski-mountaineering descent. From the summit the view covers the Velino, Gran Sasso, Majella, Marsican mountains and the Ernici and Simbruini.

The forest on the north-east side is among the wildest in the Velino-Sirente range, with wolves, bears, red and roe deer; Apennine chamois were reintroduced from 2013. Just north-west of the mountain lies the small lake-filled crater identified by Italian and Swedish geologists as a meteorite impact about 1,500 years old, the only one known in Italy.

Climbing Notes

A fit walker's day: about 1,170 m of ascent, 3¼ hours up and 2¼ hours down, on a waymarked path that becomes steep in the upper part, with loose scree in Valle Lupara and a short rocky step before the ridge. Sources grade it E to EE; sure footing matters more than technique. Take care at the junction at 1,330 m, where it is easy to follow the wrong track. Carry at least 2 litres of water (the only spring is at the trailhead) and warm, windproof layers. The recommended season is June to October; outside it, snow in Valle Lupara calls for ice axe, crampons and avalanche judgement. The Canalone Majori descent is only for sure-footed walkers comfortable on long loose scree.

History

The Chalet del Sirente at the trailhead was destroyed by arson in summer 1985 and reopened after rebuilding in 2014. A reintroduction programme for the Apennine chamois began in July 2013 with animals from the Majella.
