The former normal route from the Casermette refuge through the pine forest (old path 820, lower section) has been impassable since about 2022 because of fire damage, fallen trees and brambles, as reported in March 2023 (month only). CAI path 821 from Cava di Rena replaces it.

The current normal route above Cassino: from the road end above Terelle (1,109 m) on the new CAI path 821 from Cava di Rena through beech woods, joining the old path 820 above the burned pine forest and following the broad grassy ridge to the summit cross (1,669 m). About 560 m of ascent and 9 km return; 1 h 50 min up.

From the square at the entrance to Terelle take the narrow paved road up to the right, then turn right following signs for the Croce forestry refuge and park near a ruined building at about 1,109 m. Walk along the dirt track to a barrier; do not pass it but keep right to the old quarry of Cava di Rena, where CAI path 821 starts. This path, waymarked by CAI Cassino and built by the Terelle municipality, crosses beech woods with two rest areas and information panels, and beyond the burned forest joins the old path 820. From the junction the path climbs at a moderate gradient to the broad final ridge, crossing grass along the edge of the beech wood to a large cross and, just beyond, the summit pillar and register (1,669 m). The views take in the Liri valley, the Aurunci mountains, the peaks of the Abruzzo National Park and the Meta group, and on clear days the Tyrrhenian Sea; the abbey of Montecassino is visible below. A 30-minute return extension leads to the western end of the ridge (about 1,631 m) above Colle San Magno. CAI Frosinone gives 1 h 50 min up and 1 h 30 min down for about 9 km and 560 m of ascent; descend the same way. The old route from the Casermette refuge through the pine forest has been impassable since about 2022 after a fire (fallen trees and brambles), so ignore older descriptions that use it. Remains of German wartime positions and trenches can be seen near the ridge.

Route confidence 75%Overview
A solitary 1,669 m limestone summit rising directly above Cassino and the abbey of Montecassino in southern Lazio. A short, well-marked walk from above Terelle leads through beech woods to a broad grassy ridge with views from the Abruzzo mountains to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Monte Cairo is the high point of an isolated massif at the southern edge of the Central Apennines, above the Liri valley. With more than 1,150 m of prominence it stands well apart from its neighbours, and its south side drops steeply towards Cassino; the abbey of Montecassino sits on a spur below. From the summit ridge the view takes in the Liri valley, the Aurunci mountains, the Meta group and the peaks of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, and on clear days the Tyrrhenian Sea and Ischia.
The usual ascent starts above the village of Terelle on the north-east side. Since a fire damaged the pine forest above the Casermette refuge around 2022, the old path through it has been impassable; CAI Cassino has marked a new path (821) from the Cava di Rena quarry through beech woods that joins the old route higher up. It is a short half-day walk of about 560 m.
The massif overlooks the Second World War battlefields of Cassino, and remains of German positions and trenches can still be seen along the route.
Climbing Notes
An easy hike (CAI 'E'): about 9 km return with 560 m of ascent, 1 h 50 min up and 1 h 30 min down from the parking at about 1,109 m above Terelle. Normal hill fitness and walking shoes or boots are enough in summer. The summit ridge is exposed to wind, so carry a windproof and warm layer; take water and, for sunset or evening outings, a headlamp.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; summer days can be hot lower down but the beech woods give shade. In winter the ridge holds snow and the approach roads may be icy. Follow the new path 821 from Cava di Rena and ignore older descriptions that go up through the pine forest from the Casermette.
History
During the Second World War the Monte Cairo massif overlooked the 1944 battles for Cassino and Montecassino; a German position cut into a rock outcrop and a trench survive along the ascent route. In recent years the Terelle municipality, with EU rural development (PSR Lazio 2014–2020) funds, built the new CAI path 821 with rest areas and information panels after fire damaged the old route.
