The lift in the Reunification Tower on Ejer Bavnehøj is out of service for major repairs; the tower is open by stairs only. In October 2026 the friends' association's site still said the lift was expected to run again at the end of September 2026.

A five-minute walk of about 300 m from the free car park on Ejer Bavnehøj, past the 1924 tower and kiosk, along a farm track and through a gate onto a grassy path. It ends at the old millstone marking Denmark's highest natural point (170.86 m), in a farm meadow. The waymarked 1.4 km Ejer Bjerge trail links both summits.

Park at the large free car park on top of Ejer Bavnehøj (Ejer Bavnehøjvej 1, Skanderborg), reached from the E45 motorway at exit 54 'Ejer Bavnehøj' and signposted through Ris. Toilets and drinking water are available 07:00–22:00. Ejer Bavnehøj itself is a few metres from the car park and carries the 12.5 m Reunification Tower (1924). At 170.35 m, its natural ground is 51 cm lower than Møllehøj. From the tower, take the dirt track to the left of the Møllehjulet kiosk west for about 150 m to a small wooden farm gate; close it behind you. A grassy path continues about 150 m across a meadow, sometimes grazed by cattle, to a large millstone on the summit. The stone is a relic of the Dutch windmill that stood here from 1838 to 1917. Farm buildings stand just behind the top and limit the view to the west and north. The summit is on private farmland that is open to the public. Keep dogs on a lead and respect the fences and livestock. Return the same way, or follow the waymarked 'Ejer Bjerge Sporet', a 1.4 km loop on uneven ground with steps and gradients up to 20%.

Overview

Denmark's highest natural point (170.86 m): a grassy farm hilltop in the Ejer Bjerge of east Jutland, marked by an old millstone. It is a five-minute walk from the car park and tower on neighbouring Ejer Bavnehøj, which is 51 cm lower.

Møllehøj is part of the Ejer Bjerge, a cluster of rounded glacial hills between Skanderborg and Horsens in east Jutland. Three tops here are within a few centimetres of each other. Møllehøj (170.86 m) is the highest natural ground. Yding Skovhøj, 2.5 km to the north-west, is 170.77 m naturally but 172.66 m including its Bronze Age burial mound. Ejer Bavnehøj, 300 m to the east, is 170.35 m and carries a 1924 tower.

The summit is a meadow beside a working farm, with a millstone from the windmill that stood here from 1838 to 1917. Farm buildings block part of the view, so the wider panorama is from the 12.5 m Reunification Tower on Ejer Bavnehøj. On clear days it reaches Samsø and the Little Belt Bridge.

A visit takes 30–60 minutes. The large free car park on Ejer Bavnehøj has toilets, a summer kiosk, picnic tables and a playground, and the waymarked 1.4 km Ejer Bjerge trail links the hills. Two first-come, first-served shelters nearby allow an overnight stay.

Climbing Notes

No preparation is needed. Walk from the Ejer Bavnehøj car park along the farm track and through the gate, closing it behind you. Keep dogs on a lead, as there may be livestock. The waymarked trail has steps, gates and short gradients up to 20% and does not suit wheelchairs or pushchairs, although the tower area is close to the car park. The tower is open daily by stairs. Its lift has been out of service for major repairs, so check with the friends' association if you need it. You will need a car, bicycle or taxi to get here: Aarhus is about 40 minutes' drive away, and there is no tourist bus service.

History

Himmelbjerget was thought to be Denmark's highest point until 1847, after which Ejer Bavnehøj and Yding Skovhøj vied for the title. A survey in February 2005 found that Møllehøj's natural ground is 9 cm higher than Yding Skovhøj's and 51 cm higher than Ejer Bavnehøj's, and it was recognised as the national high point that year. The hill takes its name ('mill hill') from Ejer mill, an eight-sided Dutch windmill with an ogee cap that stood on the summit from 1838 to 1917. Its millstone now marks the top. The Reunification Tower (Genforeningstårnet) on Ejer Bavnehøj, designed by Jens Laustsen, was built in 1924.
