The usual way to climb the second-highest Tatra summit: lifts from Tatranská Lomnica via Skalnaté pleso to Lomnické sedlo (2,190 m), then about 450 m up a scree ridge that narrows into a rocky crest, a traverse below the central gully and the gully itself, with steel steps and chains on the harder parts, to the observatory on the summit. Grade I; guide or climbing qualification required.

Take the gondola from Tatranská Lomnica via Štart to Skalnaté pleso (about 1,751 m) and the two-seat chairlift to Lomnické sedlo (2,190 m), the end of the marked trails and the start of climbing terrain. Guides rope clients up near the foot of the wall. The route follows the rounded, scree-covered south-west ridge, which narrows into a rocky crest; after a steeper section it traverses below the central gully and climbs the gully to the summit, where the upper cable-car station, a weather station and the observatory stand. The harder sections are equipped with steel steps and chains; the climbing is short and easy but exposed. Allow 2–3 hours from Lomnické sedlo to the summit and about 4 hours for the round trip (3.5 km, about 450 m of ascent). Descend the same way to the saddle and take the chairlift down, or ride the aerial cable car from the summit to Skalnaté pleso; cable-car seats must be bought in advance and are limited. Some guides make a loop, going up the historic Emerici route and down the chained gully past the Mojžišov prameň spring. The summer climbing season is June to October; guided winter ascents are possible when the lifts run, with crampons and an ice axe. Weather on the summit changes fast and thunderstorms are common in summer; start with the first lifts. Non-climbers can reach the summit by the cable car from Skalnaté pleso, with a 50-minute stay.

Overview

The second-highest summit of the High Tatras (2,634 m), crowned by an observatory, a weather station and the top of a cable car. Walkers can ride up for a 50-minute visit; the climb is a short guided scramble (grade I) with chains from Lomnické sedlo.

Lomnický štít rises above Tatranská Lomnica on the south side of the High Tatras in Slovakia, a steep granite pyramid that dominates the view from the Poprad basin. For centuries it was thought to be the highest Tatra peak. Since 1941 an aerial cable car has run from Skalnaté pleso to the summit, where there is a solar observatory, a staffed weather station, a café and a small botanical garden; the summit records about 1,900 mm of precipitation and 176 days of snow a year.

Marked hiking trails stop at Lomnické sedlo (2,190 m), reached by chairlift from Skalnaté pleso. Above that the mountain is climbing terrain. The normal route, short and equipped with chains and steel steps on the harder sections, is graded I and takes about 2–3 hours up; harder options include the Jordán route from Téryho chata (II), the Téry couloir ferrata and the Birkenmajer ridge (III–IV-).

Because of the lifts, Lomnický štít is the most accessible high Tatra summit: most visitors arrive by cable car, while climbers come to tick a 2,600 m peak in half a day. Under the Tatra National Park rules, climbers must either go with a certified mountain guide or hold federation membership, register online and, for routes below grade III, have a basic-training certificate.

Climbing Notes

The normal route needs only average hiking fitness and comfort with exposure; guides compare it to the marked route over Priečne sedlo. Without climbing qualifications you must hire a certified mountain guide, who will take up to three clients on the normal route and supply harness, helmet and rope (about EUR 370–440 per group in 2026 with TatryPortal). To climb independently you need membership of your national climbing federation, online registration with TANAP and, for this grade, a basic-training certificate.

Take the first lifts from Tatranská Lomnica to Lomnické sedlo; the climb and descent take about 4 hours from the saddle. If you want to descend by the summit cable car, buy the ticket in advance, as capacity is small (one cabin of about 15 people) and slots sell out. Bring a waterproof jacket, hat and gloves even in summer.

The summer season is June to October. Winter ascents are possible with a guide when the lifts run, with crampons and an ice axe. Climbing in TANAP is permitted only in daylight from June to October and between 05:00 and 19:00 in winter, and not at all between mid-April and the end of May.

History

A local shoemaker and amateur miner named Fábry is said to have climbed it between 1760 and 1790. The first recorded ascent was by the English traveller Robert Townson with a guide on 16 August 1793; he measured its height at 2,633 m. The first winter ascent was made in 1891. Construction of the summit cable car, initiated by Juraj Orságh, director of the State Spa, began in 1936; about 70 workers carried nearly 300 tonnes of material to the summit by hand, and the line opened officially in 1941. Weather records on the summit go back to 1952, and the solar observatory at the top station was built in the 1960s.
