An outline route on the Georgia–Dagestan frontier above Kvareli: climb from Intsoba to the old Kadori Pass (2,363 m) on the main Caucasus crest, then follow the crest east past the Khubiara saddle (about 2,600 m) to the summit, whose southern and western sides are relatively gentle alpine grass and shale. Border Police permit required; no published route.

Khubiara stands on the main Caucasus watershed between the Chelti, a left tributary of the Alazani in Kvareli municipality, and the Simuri in Dagestan. The Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia describes steep north and east flanks and comparatively gentle south and west slopes covered with alpine grassland, with traces of former glaciation; the rock is Liassic clay shale and sandstone. The Soviet-era Eastern Caucasus guidebook lists two passes on the main crest beside the peak: the Kadori Pass (2,357 m, 1A in winter, with a descent to Intsoba and a bus to Telavi) and the Khubiara saddle (about 2,600 m, 1A). It notes that the pathless traverse further east, between the Khubiara saddle and the Satibisgori Pass (about 3,000 m, 1B), crosses the steep south face of Khubiara across shale gullies. The logical line from Georgia therefore climbs from Intsoba (about 900 m) through forest and pasture to the Kadori Pass, then follows the crest east for about 5 km over the Khubiara saddle and up the gentler west side to the top. That is roughly 2,200 m of ascent, best split with a camp near the pass. This is an inferred line: we found no trip report. The crest is the state border with Russia, so stay on the Georgian side and carry a Border Police permit. Descend the same way.

Overview

A 3,104 m shale summit on the Georgia–Dagestan frontier above Kvareli in Kakheti, the highest point for some distance along the main Caucasus crest east of the Kadori Pass. Gentle grassy slopes on the Georgian side, steep cliffs to the north and east, and no published route.

Khubiara rises on the main watershed of the Kakhetian Caucasus, between the Chelti valley, which drains south to the Alazani plain at Kvareli and Shilda, and the Simuri valley in Dagestan. It is made of Early Jurassic clay shale and sandstone. Its north and east sides are steep and rugged; the south and west slopes are gentler, grassed and show traces of old glaciers.

From the wine villages of the Alazani valley the crest looks close, but the climb is long: about 2,200 m from the last villages through dense forest and summer pasture. The Kadori Pass, west of the peak, is an old crossing to Dagestan, now on a closed international border, and the whole crest lies in Georgia's border zone.

The peak is almost unknown to hikers. We found no trip report; expect no waymarks, few people beyond the shepherds and possible checks by Border Police patrols.

Climbing Notes

Apply in advance for a Border Police permit (form to bpol@mia.gov.ge with route and passport copies). Plan two days: Intsoba to a camp near the Kadori Pass, then along the crest to the summit and back down. Fitness for a long, steep forest climb matters more than technique; take a GPS track you have planned on a topographic map. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer on this side of the Caucasus. Stay on Georgian territory at all times.
