Sources differ: SVÅR (hard) – the hardest of Friluftsfrämjandet Gällivare's seven 'outposts' (Friluftsfrämjandet Gällivare-Malmberget)

A pathless, 20 km round trip with about 1,300 m of ascent from the Ritsem road to the highest point of Gällivare municipality: steep birch forest and boulders, a plateau with good tent sites, a ford of Rajvojåhkkå, a long scree valley ending in a steep snowfield, and a rocky but easy summit ridge from point 1719.

About 100% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

Park a few hundred metres past the bridge over Rajvojåhkkå on the road west towards Ritsem, about 130 km from the E45 junction north of Porjus. There is no path. Head generally north, towards Rajvotjåhkkå, through birch forest that is brushy, steep and full of large boulders, then up a steep section onto an easy plateau with many good tent sites; Friluftsfrämjandet treats the trip as needing a night in a tent. Wade Rajvojåhkkå where it is widest (where the reindeer fence ends on the map). The recommended line to the summit goes up the U-shaped valley north of the reindeer herders' hut: a climb into the valley, a long stretch of loose scree, and a very steep head of the valley that is usually snow-covered until late autumn. Fill water bottles before the snowfield, as it may be the last water. Traverse the snowfield north to the next plateau; keeping near its eastern edge is fairly easy and looks down on Riehppetjåhkkå's glacier. The summit (1,810 m) is reached along the ridge from point 1719, rocky in places but not difficult. In snow-free conditions descend roughly the same way. Do not descend over the glacier: apart from crevasses, the ground below its southern edge is loose, steep and wet. Descend steep snowfields under control rather than glissading. The mountain is also climbed on ski in May.

Overview

The highest point of Gällivare municipality (1,810 m) and the most prominent summit in Stora Sjöfallet National Park, rising 1,300 m above the Ritsem road with views over Áhkká and Sarek. A pathless, demanding two-day hike with a ford and steep snowfields.

Kallaktjåkkå (Lule Sami Gállaktjåhkkå) is the high point of a compact massif on the north side of the regulated Áhkájávrre/Akkajaure reservoir in Stora Sjöfallet National Park, part of the Laponia World Heritage Site. Its prominence of about 1,170–1,190 m makes it one of Sweden's most independent mountains, and the summit has an unobstructed view across the reservoir to Áhkká and the Sarek peaks. Small glaciers lie on its flanks, including the one below Riehppetjåhkkå.

There is no trail. From the road the ascent climbs through steep, bouldery birch forest to a plateau, fords Rajvojåhkkå and follows a scree valley to a steep snowfield and a rocky but easy summit ridge. Friluftsfrämjandet Gällivare-Malmberget includes it as the hardest of its seven local 'outposts': about 20 km and 1,300 m of ascent, best split with a night in a tent.

Climbing Notes

You need fitness for 1,300 m of pathless ascent and the same down, confidence fording a glacial river and crossing steep snow, and good map-and-compass skills. Plan two days with a tent on the plateau above the tree line. Trekking poles help on the ford and snowfields; an ice axe and microspikes are worth carrying, because the steep snowfield at the head of the approach valley lingers into autumn and can be hard in the morning. Avoid the glacier on the descent. Do not go alone and leave a trip plan with someone. In May the mountain is a ski tour.
