Start at the entrance to the Szalajka valley in Szilvásvárad (about 395 m; paid parking, often full on summer weekends). Walk up the valley road past the game park, the fish ponds, the Forestry Museum, the trout hatchery and the open-air forest museum to the Fátyol waterfall; the Szalajka-völgy forest railway covers the same stretch to the Gloriett clearing (about 455 m), its upper terminus. Above the uppermost pond, follow the east side of the lake to the Szalajka spring. Behind the spring the green cave waymark climbs a railed zigzag path to the Istállós-kő cave (Istállós-kői-barlang, 546 m) in about 15 minutes: a single large chamber behind a triangular entrance, free to visit, where Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon finds were excavated. Next to the cave pick up the green triangle: it first drops steeply beside the railing for about 30 m, then turns and climbs relentlessly through forest, about 400 m of ascent in 1.7 km on a less-trodden but clear path, to the summit (Istállós-kő erőse) with its cross on the south-western rim of the Bükk plateau. The true high point of the Bükk, Szilvási-kő (960.7 m), is about 10 minutes away across a small valley, the last 70 m without a path. Return the same way, or descend via the Horotna valley on the yellow waymark to the Szikla spring and walk or take the railway back to Szilvásvárad (14.7 km and 703 m of ascent for the full loop).

Route confidence 75%Overview
A forested limestone summit (958 m) on the north-western rim of the Bükk plateau above Szilvásvárad, long thought the range's highest point. A steep path climbs from the Szalajka valley past a famous Stone Age cave to the summit cross; the true Bükk high point, Szilvási-kő, is ten minutes away.
Istállós-kő rises on the edge of the Bükk plateau, the karst upland of north-eastern Hungary inside the Bükk National Park. Until measurements around 2014 it was regarded as the highest point of the Bükk; the neighbouring Kettős-bérc turned out to be higher, with its southern top Szilvási-kő at 960.7 m, so Istállós-kő is now ranked second or third in the range and sixth or seventh in Hungary depending on the source.
The mountain is named after its cave: the Istállós-kő cave (546 m), a single large chamber behind a triangular entrance once used as a stable (istálló). It is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in Central Europe, with Aurignacian finds 30,000–40,000 years old. The usual ascent combines it with the Szalajka valley, Szilvásvárad's busy showpiece of trout ponds, a forest railway and the travertine Fátyol waterfall.
Above the cave the crowds thin out: the green-triangle path gains about 400 m in 1.7 km through beech forest to the summit cross. The top is wooded, with limited views; from here paths lead on across the plateau to Szilvási-kő, the Tar-kő cliffs, the old-growth Őserdő reserve and the Kopasz-rét meadows.
Climbing Notes
Any fit walker can do it as a half-day trip: about 6 km and 560 m of ascent one way from the Szalajka valley entrance (less if you ride the forest railway to the Gloriett clearing), with a short but very steep final 1.7 km. Wear proper boots; the path above the cave is rooty and slippery after rain and in winter. Carry water: there is none above the Szalajka spring. Stay on marked paths: the area is strictly protected and leaving the waymarked trails requires permission (the short pathless approach to Szilvási-kő is commonly walked; follow local signage). Parking in Szilvásvárad fills early on summer weekends; arrive early or come by train. A full loop including Szilvási-kő and the Horotna valley is 14.7 km with 703 m of ascent.
History
Excavation of the Istállós-kő cave began in 1911–1912 (Pál Roskó, Jenő Hillebrand) and continued under Ottokár Kadić (1929), Mária Mottl (1938) and, systematically from 1947, László Vértes; the latest work was led by Árpád Ringer from 2000. The fill yielded Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon levels, cave bear, reindeer and mammoth bones, stone and bone tools and a Palaeolithic hearth now in the Hungarian National Museum. The cave was protected in 1944 and strictly protected in 1982.
