The shortest marked route to the highest summit of the Seckau Tauern: from the Ingeringsee (about 1,220 m) steeply through forest and up the long Saurücken ridge, past the Höllkogel to a large cairn, then easily along the ridge to the summit cross at 2,417 m. About 1,230 m of ascent, 3–4 hours up, no huts.

Drive up the Ingeringgraben from Bischoffeld (about 8 km, the second half on gravel) and park at the last car park (No. 4) just before the Ingeringsee; spaces are limited on summer weekends. Walk to the chapel by the lake, follow the forest road for about 10 minutes, then turn right onto the marked alpine path (Saurückensteig), which climbs steeply through forest, crossing the forest road several times (this lower section was re-routed in 2017). Above the treeline the path follows the broad, steep Saurücken ridge, with very few flat stretches, some rocky and gravelly ground and occasional use of hands. At about 2,200–2,300 m it passes the Höllkogel (2,323 m) on the left to a large cairn, where the angle eases; turn left along the straightforward ridge to the summit cross. The signpost at the lake gives 3½ hours. Descend the same way (about 2½ hours; 6 hours return). There is no hut or water on the route and the ridge is fully exposed to sun, wind and storms. Longer marked routes come from Unterwald in the Liesingtal via the Grieskogel and from Gasthof Beisteiner from the west; the ridge traverse to the Hochreichhart over the Hirschkarlgrat involves climbing up to II.

Overview

The highest summit of the Seckau Tauern in Upper Styria (2,417 m), a gneiss peak on a long grassy and rocky ridge with no huts anywhere near. The shortest route is a steep, marked 3½-hour climb from the Ingeringsee.

The Geierhaupt stands on the main ridge of the Seckau Tauern, the easternmost high group of the Niedere Tauern, on the boundary between the Murtal and Leoben districts north of Knittelfeld. With 1,172 m of prominence it dominates the area for almost 19 km; the next higher summit is the Großer Bösenstein. The rock is gneiss, and the mountain carries grass, boulders and dwarf pine rather than cliffs on its normal route.

The group has no staffed huts, so every ascent is a long day trip and the peak sees relatively few visitors compared with the limestone mountains to the north. The view takes in the rest of the Seckau and Triebener Tauern, the Gesäuse and the Pletzen.

The Ingeringsee route is the shortest at about 1,230 m of ascent. Longer marked routes come from the Liesingtal via the Grieskogel (about 5 hours) and from Gasthof Beisteiner over several intermediate summits. The ridge to the Hochreichhart, 3.7 km east, crosses the Hirschkarlgrat with climbing up to II and is for experienced scramblers only.

Climbing Notes

Needs fitness for 1,200 m or more of steep ascent and sure-footedness on rocky ridge terrain; no technical skills on the Ingeringsee route. Carry all food and water, as there are no huts or springs on the ridge, and avoid the exposed ridge in thunderstorms or fog.

Parking at the Ingeringsee is limited and fills on summer weekends; start early. Snow lingers on the upper ridge into June. In winter the Geierhaupt is a ski-touring objective from the Liesingtal or the Triebental, with the usual avalanche precautions.
