1Approximate line — not for navigation
An automated check found that parts of this line could not be matched to mapped trails, so it may stray far from the real route. Use it for planning only, with a map and a guidebook.
Why? 4 check notes
- the line does not follow 'Ytre Låtervatnet', the route's namesake (205 m away): mislabelled
- DIN time up 3.76 h vs published 2.25 h (+67%)
- unresolved waypoints: Eidetinden ridge, Summit plateau
- waypoints not on the route line: Ytre Låtervatnet (188 m off the trail)
Sources differ: YDS class 2, no exposure (class 2+ in winter) (westcoastpeaks.com; prominent-mountains.no (Bjørstad)) · DNT red (krevende) (UT.no)
Kjerringøy's highest summit by a short, relentlessly steep route: a forest path beside Låterelva from the car park on Fv 571 (about 13 m) to the dam at Ytre Låtervatnet (278 m), then about 700 m of steep grass, scree and slabs up the ridge on a red-marked but faint path to a plateau at about 950 m and an easy walk to the top. 6–7 km and 1,000 m return; 4–5 hours.

Park at the Låter car park beside Fv 571, about 19.5 km north of the Misten ferry quay on Kjerringøy. A well-worn path follows Låterelva through pine forest, crossing the river a couple of times and once by a bridge, and climbs gently to the dam at the outlet of Ytre Låtervatnet (278 m). From here Eidetinden rises like a wall about 750 m above. At the lake keep left (the right-hand branch leads to Seta and the Strandtindan peaks, which need climbing), and at a second fork higher up keep left again (right goes to Indre Låtervatnet). The next 700 m of ascent are steep, on grassy sections and a fair amount of scree, heading north-east up the ridge. The route is marked in red, but the path gradually becomes faint; in clear weather the summit is always in view. Trip reports describe it as just steep enough not to need hands. The final 200 m cross slabs and boulders. At about 900–950 m the angle eases onto a plateau, from where an easy walk south-east leads to the summit cairn. The top is airy and exposed to the weather. Descend the same way, taking care on the steep grass and scree when wet.

Route confidence 80%Overview
The 1,020 m high point of the Kjerringøy peninsula north of Bodø, climbed in a single steep push from almost sea level. A forest path and then 700 m of steep grass and scree lead to a summit plateau with views over the Vestfjorden to the Lofoten wall, the Steigen peaks and far into Sweden.
Eidetinden rises above the north end of the Kjerringøy peninsula, about 40 km north of Bodø, between the open Vestfjorden and the inner fjord Eidekjosen. It is the highest summit in the area and one of Norway's 85 mountains with more than 1,000 m of prominence: westcoastpeaks gives about 1,002 m, measured to a saddle only about 18 m above sea level.
Unlike its neighbours, the Strandtindan peaks, which need climbing and abseils, Eidetinden is a walk. The route from Låter is short (about 3.5 km to the top) but steep: a forest path along Låterelva to the dam at Ytre Låtervatnet, then a sustained climb on grass, scree and slabs up the ridge before the angle eases on a summit plateau. There are no exposed or difficult sections, but the ascent is relentless.
The summit view covers the Lofoten chain across the Vestfjorden, the Steigen and Bodø mountains, Sørfolda and, on clear days, peaks in Sweden. The top is airy and exposed to coastal weather, so pick a clear day.
Climbing Notes
Plan 4–5 hours return. The challenge is fitness for 1,000 m of steep ascent and descent rather than technique: no scrambling is needed, but the path above Låtervatnet is faint and the slopes of grass and scree are slippery when wet, so good boots and poles help. Follow the red marks; in mist, navigation on the plateau needs care.
Kjerringøy is reached by car and ferry from Bodø (about an hour including the Festvåg–Misten crossing); check the ferry timetable before setting out. The hiking season is June to September; outside it the steep slopes hold snow and avalanche risk.
