Routes
1A half-day walk to the highest point of Ikaria: from the village of Mavrato above Agios Kirykos a stone-paved mule path climbs through kermes-oak woods to the ridge at the rock of Kapsalino Kastro (about 800 m), then follows the broad, windswept Atheras ridge west and a short pathless slope to the trig point at 1,037 m. About 550 m of ascent.

Start at the edge of Mavrato (about 500 m) beside the village cemetery, where a stone-paved path heads uphill; a small sign points to Kapsalino Kastro. The path climbs steadily through kermes-oak (prinos) woodland past abandoned farmsteads with upright stone-slab walls. After about half an hour the forest ends and low scrub opens the views over Agios Kirykos, the east coast and Fournoi. The path reaches the ridge at Kapsalino Kastro, a large rock with scant remains of a medieval castle, where signs show the trails that meet here. Take the trail heading up and slightly right along the broad ridge towards Karavostamo. A little further on you pass a stone hut used as a basic shelter; here leave the trail on the north side and angle uphill to the crest, from which a short climb leads to the trig point of Efanos (also called Fardis). From the top almost all of Ikaria is in view, with gentle plateaus to the north and steep slopes falling to the sea on the south. Return the same way, or continue on the trail north-west down to Karavostamo on the north coast (Anavasi route 8 describes this as a clear, wide path across steep slopes). West of the summit the ridge narrows into rough, rocky crests (Kako Katavasidi, Tsolias 1,020 m) with no path. The Atheras ridge concentrates the northerly meltemi: expect strong wind and gusts on the crest.

Route confidence 50%Overview
The 1,037 m high point of Ikaria, a windswept top on the long Atheras ridge that walls the island against the northern meltemi. A half-day hike from Mavrato on an old stone-paved path, with almost the whole island and the Fourni islets in view.
Efanos (also called Fardis) is the highest summit of Atheras (Αθέρας), the mountain backbone of Ikaria in the eastern Aegean; the ancient name of the mountain was Pramnos. The eastern part of the ridge carries three main tops, Efanos, Tsolias (about 1,020 m) and Pounta, with the lower Melissa ridge continuing west. The north side of the island is gentler, with plateaus and valleys; the south drops steeply to the sea. Atheras is part of the Natura 2000 network.
The usual way up starts from Mavrato above the port of Agios Kirykos, on a stone-paved path through kermes-oak woods to the ridge at Kapsalino Kastro, a rock with scant castle ruins, and then along the broad crest. A path also climbs from Karavostamo on the north coast. West of Efanos the ridge turns into rough, rocky crests without paths.
The name Atheras is linked locally to 'aeras', wind: the ridge concentrates the northerly meltemi, and the crest is rarely calm. In the Middle Ages watchtowers on the mountain passed warnings along the island with smoke signals.
Climbing Notes
A moderate half-day walk for anyone used to rough paths: about 550 m of ascent from Mavrato, with a short pathless finish. Take a windproof, water and sun protection, and the Anavasi 1:35,000 Ikaria map. Spring and autumn are best; in July and August walk early and expect very strong wind on the crest. Strong walkers can traverse the ridge west towards Tsolias and Arethousa, a long day on rough, largely pathless ground.
