Sources differ: Moderately hard (srednje teška), full route from Livno town (planinarenje.hr)

The usual way up the westernmost 2,000 m summit of the Dinarides: from the Kruzi hut (1,265 m) on the plateau above Livno, across pasture grazed by semi-wild horses to the ruined Austro-Hungarian stables at Begovača, then a steep, waymarked climb of about 600 m to the summit. About 2 hours and 750 m up.

The Kruzi hut of PD Cincar Livno stands on the Kruzi plateau north-east of Livno and is reached by a gravel road, rough in places. Fit walkers can also start in Livno itself (about 700 m): from Trg domovinskog rata follow the road towards the Duman spring of the Bistrica, turn left at the old bridge where lamp posts are signed 'Cincar i planinarski dom Kruzi', and climb an old paved path past the medieval towers and through pine forest, past the Šumareva kućica spring, to a gravel road with livestock shelters and wooden 'Cincar' sculptures. planinarenje.hr recorded 3 h 08 min and 1,347 m of ascent for this 12.5 km line to the summit. From the Kruzi plateau, head north-east past a concrete cattle trough to Begovača (about 1,400 m, also called Švabine štale), at the very foot of the mountain, with the large ruined stables of an Austro-Hungarian cheese-making farm, remains of an old livestock water system and the Begov izvor spring, which can run dry. A sign on the stables gives 1 h 15 min to the summit. The marked path climbs steeply on grass and rock, gaining about 600 m in a short distance, to the broad summit with views over the Livno, Glamoč, Duvno and Kupres fields to Dinara, Kamešnica, Vitorog and Malovan. The section from the gravel road to Begovača is unmarked but follows a track; Begovača to the summit is waymarked. Descend the same way; from Begovača back to the hut is almost level and takes about 40 minutes. Over 600 semi-wild horses roam the plateau and may crowd the springs; take care with livestock guard dogs.

Overview

A broad grassy massif of 2,006 m above Livno, described as the westernmost Dinaric summit over 2,000 m. An easy-to-moderate walk from the Kruzi hut past ruined Austro-Hungarian stables, with semi-wild horses on the plateau and views over four karst fields.

Cincar rises in south-western Bosnia and Herzegovina between Livno, Kupres and Glamoč, on the boundary of the Livno and Glamoč municipalities. It stands on a broad upland surrounded by four large karst fields: Livanjsko polje to the south-west, Duvanjsko polje to the south-east, Glamočko polje to the north-west and Kupreško polje to the north-east. Its southern and south-western slopes are open mountain pasture, while the northern side carries dense, mostly coniferous forest.

The uplands were long used for large flocks of sheep, and Begovača at the foot of the summit preserves the ruined stables and water system of an Austro-Hungarian farm. Today the plateau is known for its herd of semi-wild horses, said to number over 600, which graze around the Kruzi hut and the springs.

The climb is a straightforward hike, steep only on the final 600 m above Begovača. The real hazard is the bora: hurricane-force gusts on the summit ridge can stop a party, and in winter the mountain is fully snow-covered. Summit views reach Dinara, Kamešnica, Vitorog, Malovan, Tušnica and Buško blato.

Climbing Notes

From the Kruzi hut allow about 2 hours up and 1½ hours down, with about 750 m of ascent; the round trip from Livno town is a full day of about 25 km and 1,350 m of ascent. Fitness requirements are moderate. Water is available at Šumareva kućica (from Livno) and seasonally at Begovača; carry 1–2 litres.

Check the weather for bora: in strong wind, a 2012 party had to walk below the crest and several members turned back. Keep away from livestock guard dogs and give the horses room. In winter and spring the steep upper slope needs crampons and an ice axe.

The gravel road to Kruzi is rough in places; contact PD Cincar Livno about current road and hut conditions.

History

The stables at Begovača (Švabine štale) and remains of a livestock water system date from the Austro-Hungarian period, when the site was a cheese-making farm. Signs marking minefields and wartime bunkers have been reported on the Glamoč side of the ridge; the local club describes the waymarked routes as safe. PD Cincar of Livno maintains the Kruzi hut and the waymarks, and in 2024 built the Runolista kuća bivouac on neighbouring Troglav.
