A trekking group in August 2012 (exact day not given) found the Bu-Ulgen valley ('Buulgenskaya Stena' locality) closed to visitors by the Teberda reserve administration and had to change its route. The valley is not among the park's current official routes; whether the closure still applies was not confirmed.

From Dombay over the Chuchkhur pass into the Bu-Ulgen valley, up the gentle Bu-Ulgen glacier to a bivouac on the Bu-Ulgen pass, then across a bergschrund and a snow tongue onto the south ridge: a hard, narrow rock crest low down, easier but looser rock above. Two to three days; the Bu-Ulgen valley has been closed to visitors by the park.

From the Dombay camps the 1930s guide goes up the Dombay-Ulgen valley (2.5 hours to the upper shepherds' huts) and in 2 more hours to the Chuchkhur pass (2,712 m). Descend towards a snowfield and down it to its end, then find a faint path on the right of the stream down to the Bu-Ulgen river (about 2 hours from the pass), below the huge walls of Dombai-Ulgen and Maly Bu-Ulgen. Before reaching the river turn right (south) across several dry stony stream beds, go up a snowfield to the right of slabby rock steps, then left onto the rocks and up their grooves to the glacier tongue. After a short section of steep, stone-covered ice the Bu-Ulgen glacier is almost flat and has few crevasses. Keep left at first to a steeper section, traverse right below it and climb firn slopes to a band of steep scree below the pass. The Bu-Ulgen pass is a little over 2.5 hours from the foot of the Chuchkhur descent and has water and small tent platforms. Groups not starting in Dombay can instead come up the Bu-Ulgen river from the Gonachkhir bridge on the Military-Sukhumi road. Start very early. Climb left up the glacier on gentle slopes and go east towards the col between Bu-Ulgen and the unnamed summit to its south. A small snowfield on the left leads to the south ridge above its steepest section; cross the bergschrund on the right and follow the snowfield onto the ridge. The first rocks are fairly hard. Past several steps you reach a narrow, steep rocky crest, the hardest part of the climb, with a view of the 1 km east wall. Higher up the climbing becomes much easier, though the rock grows more brittle towards the top; the last few tens of metres are an almost level ridge. Allow 6–7 hours from the pass bivouac to the summit and slightly less to descend the same way. A variant descent through a couloir on the west wall (very brittle rock, two or three abseils, then a steep glacier) rejoins the approach to the south ridge; the guide gives 6 hours from the summit to the pass bivouac.

Route confidence 40%Overview
Bu-Ulgen (3,918 m) is a steep granite-and-gneiss tower east of Dombai-Ulgen, rising above the Bu-Ulgen and Chotcha valleys with a 1 km east wall. Its easiest route, the south ridge from the Bu-Ulgen pass, is a Russian 3A rock climb reached over the Chuchkhur pass.
Bu-Ulgen stands just north of the Main Caucasus Ridge between the Bu-Ulgen valley to the west and the Chotcha valley to the east, into which it drops in sheer walls; its east face is about a kilometre high. To the west the Bu-Ulgen glacier, about 3.5 km long, descends from the ridge carrying the Bu-Ulgen pass, and the walls of Dombai-Ulgen and Maly Bu-Ulgen enclose the valley below in one of the most impressive settings of the Western Caucasus.
The normal route is a rock climb. From the Bu-Ulgen pass a snow tongue leads onto the south ridge, which is hardest low down on a narrow, steep crest and becomes easier and more brittle higher up. The climb itself takes 6–7 hours from the pass, after a long approach of about 9 hours from Dombay over the Chuchkhur pass. Harder lines climb the north-west wall (3B), the east wall and the ribs from the Chotcha gorge (4B–5A).
Access is the main complication: the Bu-Ulgen valley lies in the strictly protected part of Teberda National Park and in the border zone, and it was closed to visitors in 2012.
Climbing Notes
You should be able to lead Russian 3A rock (about AD-) in boots on sometimes brittle rock, cross a bergschrund and move on easy glacier. Plan three days: Dombay over the Chuchkhur pass to a bivouac on the Bu-Ulgen pass (about 9 hours), summit day of 12–13 hours, and the walk out. Start the summit day very early.
Before planning, ask Teberda National Park (protection department, avb.teberda@yandex.ru) whether the Bu-Ulgen valley is open and on what terms, and obtain a border-zone pass from the FSB Border Directorate for Karachay-Cherkessia or Gosuslugi; the park cannot issue it. The only detailed route description is from the 1930s, so glacier conditions will differ.
History
V. Mitnikov's party made the first ascent in 1932 by the south side, and the same year climbed the left rib from the Chotcha gorge (4B). A. Aleksandrov climbed the north-west wall in 1937 (3B), the west-wall descent was first made in 1936, G. Rudenko climbed the right rib from the Chotcha gorge in 1951 (5A) and I. Smirnov the east wall in 1952 (4B).
